In 20th-century America, plastic was lauded as a modern miracle, a material with infinite potential. As the world entered the Age of Plastic, Catholic practice become inextricable from relations with this substance. Catholic lay people, inventors, and savvy business people dispatched plastic around the nation and the globe. This talk explores how developments in material sciences and consumer culture integrally shaped the feel of devotional Catholicism.
