We have seagulls nesting on our roof practically every year, they divebomb the dog's and I. We have tried hoses, conifer tree cones and chicken wire to no avail and I was wondering if I can shoot them with an airgun. I have a large garden so no worries with the neighbours. I am not planning to shoot them for fun or sport just to get rid of them...

Update:

Mika: You do not need a firearm certificate if the air rifle is below a certain muzzle velocity

Update 3:

I live in south east kent

An airgun is legally justifiable; it's non-lethal, so PETA and the ASPCA would have trouble making a case against you. The neighbors could concievably file complaint with the police if they see you and think its a real gun, however.

A real firearm, however, would not be legal. Just discharging a firearm in a residential area is a crime, usually filed under "Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm." You could also accrue charges of Disturbing the Peace, Criminal Mischief, and God knows what else.

I still think its a bit mean to shoot at them. Maybe you could try one of those fake owls. I dont know if that would work with seagulls but it might. You could also look online for other things to use- sometimes there are products you can spray and whatnot that dont hurt animals but they just dont like the smell or whatever so they wont come near. Try other stuff before you go shooting at them. They may be seagulls but they have feelings too...not to be corny but its true. you wouldnt like getting shot in the *** with an airgun lol

You should consult with a lawyer. It will cost some money, but at least you'll know the law and the risks. The problem with shooting pests is that most people can't spend all day watching over their flock, fields or schools of fish. You may want to install a stronger type of netting, perhaps chicken wire.

I'm sure you can find a better way than to hurt them! Put up an artificial great horned owl. They won't come near that and you won't be hurting them either.

BTW, it's really sad to see that so many people have no problem killing or hurting animals - some even laugh about it. It's sick to think that there are so many people who have no compassion, that's why there is so much animal abuse in this world. I hope the people who answered "yes" and especially the person who said he would shoot them and then put "lol" - I surely hope you don't have pets.

I'll never forget the Sea Gull that landed down on the rifle range at Fort Ord while we were all firing full auto. Now you see him, now you don't. But I think in California they are a protective bird. It being California though probably every bird is protective including the middle finger.

it depends if you have the liscence to carry a firearm.

if you do and have an appropriate one of a low calibre to use than go ahead

just make sure that no one is around and try to use the lowest calibre that you can, an air rifle is perfect.
